![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As per Britannica, "Some have proposed that the modern custom originated in France, officially with the Edict of Roussillon (promulgated in August 1564), in which Charles IX decreed that the new year would no longer begin on Easter, as had been common throughout Christendom, but rather on January 1. However, some people continued to observe April 1 as the new year and hence became the target of mockery and ridicule by those who followed the new Gregorian calendar. Of the several theories that explain the celebration of April Fools' day, the most prevalent one is that in the 16th century, when Pope Gregory XIII implemented the Gregorian calendar, January 1 became the new year. We all are aware that April Fools' day is observed on the first day of the month, but do you know why it is celebrated on this day? What is the story behind celebrating fools' day? And above all why this particular day? It is difficult to find the roots of April Fools' day, but going with the information available on this celebration it is seen that April Fools' day has been observed in the United Kingdom for at least 200 years.
